Tell everyone a little about yourself

Hello ! My name is Hélène Argo, I am a singer, performer, author and composer. My musical tastes are quite diverse, as are the repertoires I perform: pop, folk, rock, soul, blues, Caribbean music, samba and Brazilian popular music. All these influences are found in La Réjane, a pseudonym behind which my own songs are hidden.

Was your creativity affected in any way during the lockdown? Has confinement inspired or discouraged you?

Normally I live a bit of a hermit so some restrictions did not affect me too much; on the other hand, the fear of the demographic, social and political consequences of this planetary crisis has been in my mind. In addition, my job as a singer consists of a lot of bringing happiness to people and the stage is THE essential place for these exchanges of magical vibrations, because the public gives back what the artist offers them. Deprived of that contact in the auditorium and plagued by very dark sources of inspiration (when people needed hope), I wondered what purpose I served.

Was it therapeutic doing creative work during lockdown?

Yes, when I was unable do normal concerts; singing in confinement videos with other musicians gave me a lot of joy. How did you spend your time? I gardened, soaked up the sun, played the piano and the flute, and most of all drew on the creativity of other artists. Visual images and the cinema have a particular effect on me and, if I had to keep an artistic memory of all the confinement, it would be the excellent Habemus Papam by Nanni Moretti: Todo Cambia by Mercedes Sosa has become my hymn to joy and the late Michel Piccoli occupies a little corner of my heart forever.

What was the main thought behind your poem submitted to Together Behind Four Walls?

My character is a more or less voluntary recluse who, paradoxically, thrives inside her cell: the asylum where she is locked up cuts her from the outside world and at the same time protects her from the outside world, from its dangers, from its obligations. and it is, despite the constraint and the chemical restraints , the only place where she can fully live her wonderful and imaginary life as a Queen. I wrote this text long before the pandemic but I believe it resonates with what the lockdown has done to some of us.

Do you do other creative activities?

I write short stories and have fun with Instagram photo filters.

If you had to write a poem about yourself, how would it begin?

" Why ? "

"pourquoi"
