AN INTERVIEW WITH monique tell

Picture

  • Monque Tell lives in Lyon in France, she sent a wonderful piece of writing as well as some great photographs she took during the time of confinement due to Covid 19. You can read her interview in English or French

Tell everyone about yourself

Thoughtful people, as they should, leave me their seat on the metro. I am not old, I am getting elderly (71 years old), it is a nuance I like people to take into consideration. I live in Lyon, France, in a small apartment of 40m2 in the Croix-Rousse district, architecturally and historically renowned for its population of silk weavers and at the origin of the first workers' cooperatives in the country and people's revolts, leading to the Commune of Paris.

Was your creativity affected in any way during confinement? Did lockdown inspire or discourage you?

I kept a diary almost every day: I was interested in the idea of ??everyday life in exceptional times. So you could say that confinement inspired me.

Was it therapeutic to do creative work during confinement?

For me, writing is therapeutic in essence, like all creative work, even if it is not a question of limiting it to this function; it was therefore even more the case during confinement and it is probably not by chance that I wrote regularly. >How did you spend your time? Apart from writing, I started with a big thourough clean up of my apartment (fortunately small) which I had not done since I moved there. When this motivation died down, . I then spent a lot of time on the phone to be in contact with my close friends, and on the internet to try not to miss anything, the hundreds of ideas, debates, jokes, videos, songs, different people's point of view … Which accumulated daily in my mailbox. Sometimes it was too much and some days, not being on facebook or other social media, I stopped being on the phone and computer to find myself. I didn't listen to the news much let alone the presidential speeches, I went out once or twice a day with this tedious compulsory certificate that I had to present only once. Sometimes, with one or two friends, we would meet in a place for a distant chat and a walk in the neighborhood. Some evenings we met under the windows of a musician friend who played songs for her neighbors and whom we accompnied in chorus from the street…

What was the main thinking behind your poem submitted to Together Behind Four Walls ?

I found the concept interesting, I was touched and flattered that I was offered to participate, especially since it was a project promoted by an English editor, so foreign to me. This idea of ??pieces of writing from all countries, of all styles, of all levels, in all languages, seemed to me original, benevolent and carrying hope in this moment of closing of the borders and anguish for many people. I immediately wanted to participate.

Do you do any other creative activities?

Photography and singing

If you had to write a poem about yourself, how would it start?

The door was open, so she entered
