AN INTERVIEW WITH b the poet

Picture
Tell everybody a little about yourself

My name is B The Poet, I have been writing and performing my poems since I was twelve. I am now fifteen and I am home-educated... I write everything from scripts, to poems, short stories, and biographies.

Was your creativity affected in anyway during the lockdown? Did being lockdown make you feel inspired or deflated?

An interesting mixture of both, I have found inspiration but by trying different creative and artistic mediums such as painting and photography.

Was it therapeutic doing creative work during lockdown?

Very much so but anybody who knows me knows that creativity has always been my outlet for my emotions.

How did you occupy your time?

I have been learning to speak German and exploring different art forms.

What was the main thinking behind your poem submitted to Together Behind Four Walls ?

It's sort of an abstract representation of my idea of solitude and isolation, which I personally have learnt to enjoy. it's also representation of me missing my friends and " feeling hollow " by the obvious lack of people in my life at this time.

What inspires most of your poems,

Too challenging of a question, that's like asking an abstract painter to explain their motives :)

Do you have any favourite poems, from all the poems you have written
?

For sure, I wrote these two super long ones that are like 7 or so minutes long and tell this super complex story... they are my absolute faves :)

Do you remember the first poem you ever wrote or one of the first?

Yes I do, it was called " Flying " and it was all about this girl watching the apocalypse happen and then finding out it was all a dream - I wrote that when I was twelve.... -

Do you ever think of poems before going to sleep or just after waking up?
A
ll the time but I think every person in creative arts would say yes, inspiration isn't something we can call on but something that calls upon us... I have notebooks filled with little quotes/song lyrics and all sorts of first drafts from when I just get a hit of inspiration...

Do you hand write poems or go directly on to your computer?

All my first drafts are always handwritten as I love the genuine connection to my art... When they are edited, they go into my digital collections but I keep all my first drafts ( in handwritten form )

Do you ever give up on poems you have started?

No, I wouldn't say that... If it isn't flowing in a way I like, right in that moment I won't use it but I'll write it down and then use it in a different poem or story.

Do you do any other creative activities?

I like acting, dancing, painting and photography but I like to dabble in all art forms, I believe that for creativity to truly be an outlet, you need lots of tools and different mediums...

Do you only focus on poetry or do you also write prose?

I have never been able to limit myself to just one form of writing... I am always writing in some form or another :)

Do you poems ever have strong messages?

Yes, I write a lot of both personal and political poetry... it all depends when the inspiration comes calling :)

How would you describe the tone of your poems?

Passionate, edgy and very moody teenager work haha! :)

If you had to write a poem about yourself, how would it start?
I did once do that and it started
" I write poetry because it is everything I never said,
Without it I am split apart,
Like scissors to violin strings... "
